Yes! I can teach a class!I have developed a full weekend's workshop worth of classes, that can be offered together or separately.
Lecture, ideal for guilds or large groups. Complete with Powerpoint presentation about the history and social role of knitting in Selbu, including photographs I wasn't able to include in the book. I'll keep talking as long as you keep asking questions. Combine with a book signing for a Friday night introduction for those unable to take longer classes.
Norway's Favorite Mittens is my standard class on knitting the Selbu mitten. The class project is a worsted weight adult-sized mitten, which demonstrates all of the construction features of the Selbu design. You will knit an original two-color design based on a year's research studying old mittens and gloves from Norway. Techniques to be covered include stranded knitting, a stranded cuff, shaping the thumb gusset, shaping the pointed fingertip, and working the thumb. In addition, students can examine thirty sample mittens and gloves, recreated from actual antiques and museum collections. After you knit this first pair, even a complete beginner will have the skills necessary to tackle the fine gauge projects in my book.
If you prefer, we knit a slipper and make this a Traditional Norwegian Stockings class. The class project is also worked in worsted weight yarn for an adult size slipper sock. Students will learn stranded knitting in the round and back and forth across a heel flap, and how to work a very simple stranded peasant heel. I'll also show you how I add a suede sole to make a very comfortable and flexible house shoe. You'll wear them all winter.
Now that you understand the basic construction, you'll want to design your own mitten. I'll bring a blank mitten grid in a range of sizes and a pattern library. We'll talk about graphic layout, and then you can color in your grid to create a unique design in the Selbu style.
Students will need proficiency knitting in the round with dp needles, and should be ready to knit stranded patterns in two colors.
Materials: Two colors of yarn and DPN needles appropriate to the yarn. Fingering weight yarn and size US 2 needles will make toddler size mittens, worsted weight yarn and size US 4 needles will make adult size.
