I designed these mittens for my daughter, who rightly complains that she has no pretty mittens of her own. Selbu style mittens are a marvel of design: the graphic and structural elements work together to create a piece that is a joy to knit and a pleasure to wear. This pattern has a narrower thumb for small hands, which is easily enlarged by working the gusset a few more rows than the chart describes, and making up the difference on the thumb by adding plain stitches on each side.
Adult Small or Child. 4.25" across the palm and 12.75" from hem to fingertip
30st/31row = 4"/10cm over STRANDED stockinette
Fingering weight yarn of your choice. Sample uses Rauma Finullgarn (100% wool, 50 g, 175m) 1 skein each in 405 light grey and 435 red. I recommend wool or mostly wool.
Intermediate knitting. Knit, purl, K2Tog, SSK, Make 1, and especially stranded knitting, which is easier than it looks. Selbu mittens make a great "first stranded" project.
